About

Alperen Cimen

I am a prospective PhD student in the Psychological & Brain Sciences program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, beginning Fall 2026. I will be advised by Dr. Andy Alexander with co-advisor Dr. Nina Miolane.

I completed my B.S. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering specialized in Digital Signal Processing, with a Minor in Computer Science, at Ozyegin University, Istanbul, Turkey, graduating with High Honors — GPA: 3.56/4.00, top 4 in my department of 55 students.

My research lies at the intersection of experimental and computational neuroscience. I aim to reveal mechanistic understanding of the network algorithms used by both artificial and biological neural networks. I have hands-on experience in both experimental work (calcium imaging, electrophysiology, mouse behavioral training) and computational modeling (recurrent neural networks, latent dynamics, path integration).

Outside of research, I am a competitive athlete with a background in triathlon, cycling, and swimming, having competed at the national level in Turkey. My hobbies include aviation, coffee tasting, origami, and skiing.
